Telekom Networks Malawi (TNM) has officially launched its 5G network in the country, marking a major milestone in the digital transformation journey. The development is being described as a significant step forward for both government and private sector players, with the potential to create social and economic impact across various sectors.
Speaking during the unveiling ceremony held in Lilongwe, TNM Acting Chief Executive Officer and Chief Technical Officer Lloyd Gowera said the 5G network will revolutionize how Malawians live, work, and interact.
“5G is a game changer for Malawi. It will play a key role in shaping lifestyles and driving innovation in sectors such as health, education, finance, and agriculture. It will also act as a catalyst for economic growth and financial inclusion,” said Gowera.
He added that despite existing business challenges, TNM remains committed to investing in digital services and providing cutting-edge technology. Gowera emphasized that the launch is geared toward commercial use and is aligned with Malawi’s 2030 economic agenda and Vision 2063.
“Our goal is to offer digital platforms that support entrepreneurship, innovation, education, and industrial growth, creating a more connected and prosperous Malawi,” he said.
Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Information, Godwin Chiyamwaka, praised the initiative, stating that 5G will play a crucial role in implementing the National Digitalization Policy. He highlighted that the high-speed network will benefit sectors like agriculture, education, and health.
Chiyamwaka also revealed that the government is in the process of designing a Smart City in Mvera, where 5G connectivity will be essential.
Currently, the 5G service has been rolled out in parts of Lilongwe, including Areas 2, 11, 14, and 47.
