Chakwera Urges Youth to Embrace Skills Development for Economic Growth

President Lazarus Chakwera has encouraged young people to embrace hard work and skills development as a path to economic transformation in Malawi.

Speaking at the official opening of the 2025 TEVETA Conference in Lilongwe on Thursday, Chakwera highlighted the importance of vocational training in creating income-generating opportunities that promote self-reliance among the youth. He emphasized that empowering young people with technical skills could lead to job creation and overall economic growth.

The President also commended TEVET Malawi for equipping young people with practical skills that bring lasting change to their lives.

Minister of Labour, Peter Dimba, praised Chakwera’s leadership in improving technical and vocational education, noting that the construction of new technical colleges across the country has increased student enrollment from 2,500 to 7,000.

TEVET Board Chairperson, Pyoka Tembo, described vocational skills development as a crucial pillar in achieving Malawi 2063. He added that the conference would serve as a platform for sharing best practices, drawing inspiration from successful TEVET initiatives in Malawi and beyond.

Tembo further emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in skills development, calling for stronger partnerships to improve training, curriculum development, resource mobilization, and infrastructure within the TEVET sector.
