The National Development Party (NDP) has signaled its willingness to engage in political negotiations and form alliances with like-minded parties ahead of Malawi’s general elections slated for September 16, 2025.
NDP President Frank Tumpale Mwenifumbo revealed in an interview on Sunday that the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), following a meeting held on Saturday in Lilongwe, has authorized the leadership to explore coalition possibilities.
“This mandate includes the freedom to initiate, lead, and participate in discussions and negotiations aimed at establishing strategic political alliances, coalitions, or partnerships with political parties and formations that share the values and vision of the NDP.
“This decision is driven by the NEC’s commitment to strengthening the party’s role in shaping the national political agenda and advancing inclusive and democratic governance,” said Mwenifumbo.
NDP Secretary General Wakuda Kamanga emphasized that the party leadership has been instructed to ensure transparency, integrity, and accountability throughout the negotiation process.
“Provide timely updates to the NEC on the progress and direction of such engagements as well as submit any proposed alliance or coalition agreement to the NEC for final ratification before execution,” he said.
Kamanga added that the NEC remains firmly committed to the democratic principles of the NDP and to promoting national progress through strategic and inclusive political collaboration.
Malawi will head to the polls on September 16, 2025, to elect a President, 229 Members of Parliament, and over 460 ward councillors.
