The atmosphere was one of reflection and gratitude on Friday as Salima District Council held its final full council meeting for the 2019–2025 cohort, ahead of the September general elections.
During the meeting, Members of Parliament and Ward Councillors received certificates of recognition for their service over the past five years, before the official end of their term. The gathering was characterized by appreciation speeches and recognition of developmental milestones achieved during their tenure.
District Commissioner for Salima, James Mwenda, commended the outgoing members for their commitment and unity, which he said played a key role in implementing impactful projects across the district.
“You have left behind a legacy that speaks volumes. From the maternity wing at Mnema to new school blocks to police units, these developments were identified and prioritized unanimously by the council, showing maturity and collective responsibility,” Mwenda said.
He praised the council for fostering inclusive planning and transparent decision-making, noting that such cooperation is essential in local governance and service delivery.
Deputy Council Chairperson, Letani Mthaphwi, also applauded the working relationship between the council secretariat and elected officials, attributing the successful implementation of projects to effective coordination and shared vision.
“The collaboration we have had with the council leadership has been exemplary. I urge the secretariat to maintain these strong work ethics as we transition into a new cohort,” said Mthaphwi.
The meeting closed with a symbolic handover of certificates, which many councillors and MPs described as a humbling gesture and a reminder of their duty to serve with integrity and impact.
With campaigns for the next general elections set to intensify, the event marked a dignified conclusion to a term that local authorities say will be remembered for visible development and strengthened governance structures.
The Full Council meeting was financially supported by New Building Society Bank through their Salima Service Center and was broadcast live on the district’s two community radios, Chisomo Radio Station and Love Community Radio 104.5 FM – Salima.
