Minister of Sports Uchizi Mkandawire has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting football legends in the country, acknowledging their vital role in shaping Malawi’s sports history.

Mkandawire made the remarks in Lilongwe during the inaugural Annual General Meeting of the Football Legends Association, describing the event as a promising step toward securing a better future for retired athletes.

“The government is committed to supporting all sporting disciplines, and the initiative shown by the Football Legends in organizing this AGM demonstrates their readiness to work towards sustainable welfare,” said Mkandawire.

Meanwhile, the Vice President of the Football Association of Malawi (FAM), Madalitso Kuyera, commended the establishment of the association, saying it has filled a long-standing gap in addressing the welfare needs of retired footballers.

He added that FAM is now working in collaboration with the Football Legends Association through a memorandum of understanding aimed at ensuring joint efforts to support the legends. Kuyera further revealed that long-term plans are in place to sustain their well-being.

Founder of the Football Legends Association, Jim Kaluwa, expressed joy over the successful hosting of the first AGM, describing it as a significant milestone in their journey.

“It hasn’t been an easy road, but I’m proud that we’ve reached this stage. Our core focus is to ensure the welfare of football legends through initiatives such as medical support schemes,” said Kaluwa.

The association has also developed a constitution to guide its operations going forward.
